The Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE) 1986/87 Fleer Basketball National Box Break will take place at the 2018 National Sports Collectors Convention (aka “The National”), held at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, August 4, 2018. The break will begin at 2:00pm EDT at the BBCE booth, located in the Corporate Area.
This will not be a traditional “break”, where the host opens the entire contents of the pack/box/case live to a streaming audience. BBCE will distribute all 36 packs in the box; each participant may decide to keep the pack sealed or open it.
The entry price for this box break is $2,000 per spot, with 36 spots available.
The first 27 spots will be released for sale on the BBCE website (www.BBCE.com) on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at 4pm CDT. There will be an initial limit of one spot per person. If these spots do not sell out by Sunday, July 15, 2018, additional spots may be purchased at that time until the first 27 spots are filled. The final 9 spots will be sold at The National, beginning Wednesday, August 1, 2018 when the show floor opens to the public, also limited to one spot per person until the day of the box break, Saturday, August 4, 2018.
The 1986/87 Fleer Basketball Wax Box reserved for The National Box Break originates from the BBCE “Store Original” find, purchased in April 2018 out of Jefferson City, MO. The box contains 36 original packs, has been authenticated by BBCE owner Steve Hart and BBCE buyer Reed Kasaoka, and fulfills all the qualifications for what is considered a clean and untampered 1986/87 Fleer Basketball Wax Box. A full letter of authenticity is available for review on request and will be on display next to the box throughout the National. Steve and Reed have confirmed two packs in this box exhibiting a Michael Jordan rookie card showing face up through the top of the wrapper. In addition, they have also confirmed the existence of a third pack which exhibits a Jordan “run”, where the card showing face up through the top of the wrapper indicates the presence of a Jordan rookie within the pack, based on the known Fleer collation sequence for this product. Each pack still has the original price sticker on it, when it was tagged for sale at retail in 1986.
Upon paid confirmation of each spot, the buyer agrees to share the following information – first name and last initial, city and state of residence – to illustrate to the public who owns each of the 36 spots in the break.
The 1986/87 Fleer Basketball Wax Box will be shrinkwrapped in BBCE Authenticated-branded wrap and be displayed at the BBCE booth throughout The National. It will remain wrapped until the box break begins on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 2:00pm EDT. Draft spots will be assigned at random prior to breaking the seal on the box, utilizing non-participating members of the audience to assist with the selection process. Each pack will go into a tamper-proof holder pre-labeled with the buyer’s name, labeled with the pack’s draft spot, then distributed to each buyer. Buyers who aren’t present for the box break will be contacted via phone or email to arrange shipping.
Draft spots shall be described as follows:
Upon lifting the lid of the box, the four stacks each containing nine packs will be described by their location in the box – Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right.
Within each stack, #1 will be assigned to the top pack of the stack; #9 will be assigned the bottom pack of the stack.
For example, “Top Right, #3” represents the pack located in the top right stack of the box, third one from the top.
Once all the packs have been distributed, buyers can consult with Steve and Reed on what card and/or sticker may be showing in their pack(s), what they can expect to pull should they open the pack, and/or request BBCE submit the pack(s) to PSA on their behalf for authentication and grading. Buyers should note that PSA, not BBCE, assigns the grades on unopened packs, and with the presence of the price sticker on these packs, the highest grade PSA will give is a PSA 7.
Should any disputes arise during this box break, BBCE owner Steve Hart will have the final say on resolving any issues. Employees of BBCE are not eligible to participate in this box break. By participating in this box break, each buyer agrees to these rules, and that all decisions made by BBCE are final.
